Contract currency is the starting point; inventory, competition and pricing power determine the speed of pass-through.
For an imported input, currency depreciation should raise local-currency cost. Yet supplier inventory, fixed-price periods, hedges and the desire to defend market share can delay the effect on invoices.
When demand is weak, sellers may absorb part of the move in margins; when demand is strong, pass-through tends to be faster. Prices that fall more slowly when the currency reverses reveal asymmetry in costs and competition.
Procurement analysis should track realised unit cost, payment terms and the currency-fixing date rather than list prices. Product- and supplier-level pass-through estimates make budget scenarios more useful than one generic FX assumption.
